Finance Minister Announces 10% Tax Deduction for School Donation Fund
Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan said the 2027 budget permits a tax deduction of up to 10% of total income for contributions to the Tabung Sumbangan Wang Awam Sekolah, urging alumni to give.
Speaking to alumni of St John’s Institution, Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan announced that the upcoming 2027 federal budget includes a tax incentive allowing contributors to deduct up to 10% of their total income for donations to the Tabung Sumbangan Wang Awam Sekolah. The fund is intended to finance school day-to-day costs, facility maintenance, equipment purchases and extracurricular programmes. Amir called on former pupils to make substantial gifts and to mentor the next generation, stressing that the ethos and opportunities they received should be passed on.
He reflected on his own four-decade-old connection to the school, saying the “Johannian spirit” remains with him. The minister’s appeal aims to boost private support for education through both financial and non-financial means.
Why it matters
The tax incentive could increase private funding for schools, easing budget pressures and improving educational resources.
