Finance Minister Nazare says pensions and salaries will be paid despite political crisis

Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare told TVR 1 that the risk of missing pension and salary payments is ruled out, but a new government is needed to amend the budget.

Speaking on TVR 1, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare dismissed the possibility that pensions and salaries might go unpaid, despite the ongoing political crisis that removed the Bolojan executive and constrained budget-rectification abilities. He highlighted that ending the political deadlock and installing a new government capable of executing a budget amendment are crucial steps. Nazare added that, in the absence of a fully empowered cabinet, Parliament could still theoretically pass a corrective measure.

He also referenced the pending Standard & Poor’s rating assessment, scheduled for Friday evening, and said he trusts Romania’s arguments will keep the sovereign rating from slipping to junk. The minister’s comments aim to reassure the public and markets amid uncertainty.

Why it matters

Ensuring pension and salary payments remain secure is vital for public confidence during a governmental transition.
