Finance Minister Sitharaman says GST Council will tackle e-invoicing and tax reforms on Oct. 7

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the GST Council's Oct. 7 meeting will focus on process reforms such as e-invoicing and input-tax-credit rules, part of a "GST 2.0" agenda.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told an audience in Bengaluru that the GST Council's upcoming meeting on Oct. 7 will concentrate on "GST 2.0" process reforms, including extending e-invoicing to more taxpayers and streamlining input-tax-credit provisions. She noted that the previous council session dealt with rate rationalisation, leaving procedural issues for this gathering. Sitharaman invited businesses and tax professionals to file specific representations on GST irregularities and to help shape evidence-based policy, even if it means suggesting removal of benefits they currently enjoy.

She called on the International Tax Research and Analysis Foundation to raise its profile as a leading tax-policy think-tank. The minister also cautioned that decisions on digital services taxation, cryptocurrency and the Tiger Global Supreme Court ruling require careful, cross-border analysis, and she signalled openness to an institutional mechanism for clarifying the classification of digital transactions.

Why it matters

The reforms could simplify tax compliance and affect millions of Indian businesses and digital service providers.
