Finland adopts green background for new taxi licence plates
The Finnish government approved a regulation that will make taxi licence plates green with black numbers, to be applied from the turn of the year.
On Thursday, the Finnish cabinet adopted a decree altering the appearance of taxi registration plates, specifying a green background and black registration numbers. This adjustment is part of a larger amendment to the vehicle law that adds compulsory taxi plates and other regulatory measures. The transport and communications ministry announced the change, noting that the colour choice aims to improve visibility and aid police monitoring.
The compromise was described as a win for the Perussuomalaiset party and for transport minister Lulu Rantelle, who supported the inclusion of mandatory taxi meters. The decree is set to become operational at the turn of the year, coinciding with the broader vehicle-law reforms.
Why it matters
The new plate design will make taxis easier to identify and support law-enforcement oversight in Finland.
