Finland braces for colder, wetter autumn as road-ice risk rises

Forecasters warn that Finland will see falling temperatures and increased moisture this week, heightening the danger of icy roads.

Foreca predicts a shift to colder and wetter weather in Finland after a relatively warm start to autumn, raising the likelihood of icy road conditions nationwide. High pressure will keep parts of southern and western Finland warm for a couple of days, with temperatures reaching 17-18 °C, but will give way to cooler air midweek, bringing temperatures down to around 10 °C. In Lapland, daytime highs may approach zero and a stronger low-pressure system could bring the first sleet and snowfall of the season.

Persistent fog and low clouds could make daytime temperatures up to five degrees lower than nearby sunny areas, while rain spreads from the west over the weekend. Road surfaces, especially bridges and sections near lakes, may fall below freezing during clear, calm nights, creating frost and freezing-fog hazards. Foreca advises drivers to reduce speed and increase following distances as visibility can drop sharply.

Why it matters

The forecast signals tougher driving conditions and higher accident risk for commuters across Finland.
