Finland expands maternity pack, adds funded activity ball and restores condoms

Finland's maternity benefit has risen to €210, allowing a richer maternity pack that now includes a colorful activity ball funded by the government's Suomi liikkeelle program.

Kela reported that the maternity allowance has been raised to €210, which permits an expanded maternity pack with additional items. Among the new contents is a soft, brightly patterned ball featuring small animals and English fruit labels such as grapes and orange; its cost is covered by the Suomi liikkeelle program outlined in the cabinet's agenda. The ball, manufactured in China, aims to support parent-baby interaction and encourage joint activities.

The updated pack also reinstates condoms and lubricants that were missing from the previous distribution. The new design, titled "Kuvitellaan tulevaa," was created by illustrator Eveliina Muotkavaara. Recipients may decline the pack and receive the €210 as cash instead.

Why it matters

The changes increase financial support for new parents and introduce tools to promote early child development.
