Finland imposes temporary air restriction in Gulf of Finland as Russia reports drone interceptions

Finland's defence forces announced a temporary restriction zone in the eastern Gulf of Finland, while Russian authorities warned of drones and downed four of them.

Earlier this morning the Finnish defence forces declared a temporary limitation area in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland to safeguard civilians and improve anti-drone operations. At the same time, Russian officials issued a drone alert for the Leningrad region, the area that extends deepest into the gulf near St Petersburg. The regional governor said four unmanned aircraft were shot down in response to the warning.

Why it matters

The alerts show rising security concerns over drone activity in a strategically important Baltic waterway.
