Finland ramps up motor-generator plants to meet rising flexible power demand
New motor-generator units totalling about 150 MW are being built or planned across Finland, while Ecogrid Energy will add up to 300 MW of flexible capacity at its Porin data centre.
Finland is seeing an unexpected surge in flexible power capacity as utilities respond to growing electricity-demand volatility from renewable sources and data-centre expansion. Ecogrid Energy plans to couple up to 300 MW of motor-generator output with its Porin data centre, while other operators are adding about 150 MW of similar plants across the country. EPV’s 43-MW gas-engine facility began operating in Torniossa in April, with a second unit expected in Lappeenranta, though the latter may not be ready until 2029.
Suomen Voima is preparing an 80-MW gas-engine project in Kotka’s Mussalo district, still in the licensing phase and likely to be completed years later due to long lead times. The shift reflects the need for rapid-start generation to balance fluctuations from wind and solar, especially as data centres increase load and battery storage projects grow to about 1 700 MW nationwide.
