Finland's assault reports surge past 36,000, on track for record high
Statistics Finland says more than 36,000 assault complaints were filed between January and September, a rise of over 10% and likely to set a new record.
According to Statistics Finland, the number of assault reports filed with police from January through September 2026 topped 36,000, marking a rise of over 10% compared with the same timeframe last year. Senior Statistician Kimmo Haapakangas highlighted that monthly averages of about 4,000 assaults point to a new all-time high, eclipsing the previous record of 44,600 cases recorded in 2025. All regional police departments reported upward trends, with the most pronounced growth in Western and Eastern Uusimaa, where assault counts have doubled since 2015.
The interim data also showed 56 suspected homicides and 306 attempted homicides during the nine-month span, figures that match those recorded in the corresponding period of 2025. These statistics underscore a broadening pattern of violent crime across the country. Authorities have not yet indicated specific causes or policy responses to the surge.
Why it matters
