At the opening of the 257th National Defence Course, Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen warned that Russia's imperial ambitions will not stop with the war in Ukraine, asserting that Moscow aims to restore its historic Soviet-era sphere of influence. He characterised the threat as enduring and unpredictable, calling for a calm yet decisive Finnish response. Finland has just completed a 200-kilometre barrier along its eastern frontier, a project that cost 356 million euros and involved compensating about a thousand landowners.
The minister also announced a new joint counter-drone initiative with Sweden, describing it as a historic step in Nordic defence cooperation. He pointed out that the impact of increased European defence spending will become evident only in the 2030s, and praised the rise in Finnish defence exports, which saw 479 licences granted and roughly €700 million in completed sales last year.
