Finland's new passenger cars are over half electric for the first time
Fully electric passenger cars represented 50.4% of Finland's new registrations from January to September, surpassing the 50% threshold for the first time.
In Finland, fully electric passenger cars accounted for 50.4% of all new registrations from January through September, according to Autoalan Tiedotuskeskus, marking the first time the share exceeded half. September's electric share was even higher at 62.1%, up from 43.2% a year earlier. Tero Kallio, CEO of Autotuojat ja -teollisuus ry, said the country will be remembered for 2026 as the year the electric-car proportion crossed the 50% threshold.
Total new passenger-car registrations increased by 5.5% compared with the previous year, reaching 56,928 units, while van registrations dropped 11.9% in the same period. Registrations of trucks remained stable and buses grew by 4.9%, and the market for used passenger cars saw a slight decline.
