Finland targets doubling India trade and seeks more skilled Indian workers

Finland's ambassador to India says the two countries aim to double their roughly $3 billion trade and attract additional skilled Indian professionals under a new mobility partnership.

Finnish Ambassador to India Mikko Kivikoski said Finland sees "huge possibilities" to raise trade with India from one outlet level of around $3 billion to double that figure, citing the India-EU Free Trade Agreement as a key framework. He pointed to a record year of diplomatic activity, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagement, President Alexander Stubb’s state visit, the Nordic-India Summit in Oslo, and visits by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

Finnish businesses are increasingly eyeing Indian markets, and the World Circular Economy Forum in Gandhinagar, co-hosted by the two governments, underscored cooperation. Kivikoski stressed that his embassy’s task is to turn this political momentum into concrete projects, especially by expanding the mobility partnership that will bring more skilled Indian workers, building on the existing community of over 30,000 Indians in Finland’s ICT and engineering sectors.

Why it matters

The push could significantly boost economic ties and create new opportunities for skilled workers in both Finland and India.
