Finland to Deploy Cell-Broadcast Emergency Alerts to Phones by Year-End

Finland is set to launch a nationwide emergency alert system that employs cell-broadcast technology to deliver warnings straight to citizens' mobile phones, aiming for completion before the year closes. A spokesperson for the digital and population services data agency confirmed the timeline, while the interior ministry highlighted the system's ability to issue fast, geographically targeted alerts on all carriers without any app download.

To enable the service, the government has submitted a proposal to parliament to amend the Act on Emergency Warnings. The new platform will complement one outlet warning channels, which include the 112 Suomi app, radio, teletext page 112 and television broadcasts. Interior Minister Mari Rantanen has called the project a priority and secured funding for swift construction. The initiative is driven by heightened security concerns after warhead-laden drones were detected over Finnish airspace, prompting indoor shelter orders in the Uusimaa region.
