Finland to receive EU funds for new drone detection and counter-measures

The Finnish Interior Ministry announced that the EU will finance drone surveillance and neutralisation systems for the Border Guard.

Finland's Interior Ministry confirmed that the European Union will provide financial support for the Border Guard to obtain drone detection and counter-drone systems. The grant is part of the EU's border security and visa policy funding tool, intended to help member states facing heightened border pressures such as hostile or disruptive activities. The resources will be used for purchasing hardware, integrating the systems and training personnel.

The programme targets improved surveillance of drones on Finland's eastern border and the Gulf of Finland, with most acquisitions scheduled between 2027 and 2029. The initiative also seeks to bolster overall internal security by protecting free movement within the EU.

Why it matters

Enhanced drone monitoring will improve Finland's border security and protect free movement in the region.
