Finland unveils new fuel-price relief package and carbon-capture funding

Environment Minister Sari Multala confirmed that the government has reached an agreement on a fuel-price relief package, allocating funds for transport, agriculture and vehicle tax cuts.

During a session in parliament, Environment and Climate Minister Sari Multala disclosed that the cabinet has finalized a relief package aimed at mitigating one outlet fuel-price surge. The plan provides financial support to the transport and farming sectors and introduces a permanent cut to the basic vehicle tax, funded by reallocating unused climate-action money. Additional resources will be directed toward building biogenic carbon-capture capacity, known as "pipe plugging" funds.

The government emphasized that the package will be financed from existing budgetary space rather than new borrowing, and it will allocate a modest sum for further study of the fuel market to enhance competition. Opposition parties have resisted changes to the overall distribution obligations, but the minister noted that the impact on petrol stations will be minimal.
