Finnish farm groups demand competition probe into S-ryhmä's market practices
The Finnish agricultural organisations MTK and SLC have asked the Competition and Consumer Authority to examine whether S-ryhmä has breached competition rules in the grocery procurement market.
Finland's central farm organisations, the Maa- ja metsätaloustuottajain Keskusliitto MTK and the Swedish-language SLC, have formally requested that the Kilpailu- ja kuluttajavirasto assess S-ryhmä's activities for potential violations of competition law. The two bodies argue that the removal of competition among independent regional co-ops has strengthened S-ryhmä's purchasing influence in the grocery market, to the detriment of shoppers and product suppliers.
Their statement criticises one outlet market arrangement as weakening the position of both consumers and vendors. The organisations point out that the competition regulator previously examined S-ryhmä's internal cooperation in the early 2000s, but they contend that circumstances have changed and a new review is needed. The request seeks clarification on whether S-ryhmä's practices contravene the competition act.
