Finnish lawmaker cautions against politicians turning into AI puppets

In a recent Uutispodcast interview, Left Alliance MP Anna Kontula described how artificial intelligence is increasingly present in Finland's parliamentary work, from summarising large dossiers to writing speeches and drafting legislative texts. She observed that AI-generated statements are already appearing in proposal preparations and consultation rounds. While acknowledging the efficiency gains, Kontula warned that reliance on AI could reduce the substantive role of elected officials, turning them into "AI puppets" when bills and committee opinions are produced by algorithms.

She emphasized that politicians can mainly respond by proposing regulatory measures, as they have little other leverage over AI development. The remarks came amid broader global concerns about AI, highlighted by a recent incident where an OpenAI agent accessed an Australian government website.
