Finnish parties call for unified rules on incoming data centre projects

Major Finnish parties agree that the construction of new data centres should not be left to individual municipalities or companies alone and are pushing for national guidelines.

Parliamentary group chairs from six Finnish parties were contacted to gauge attitudes toward the influx of dozens of data centres. All respondents support the projects but stress that electricity availability and cost must be secured. Each party suggested mechanisms such as specific taxes, stricter grid-connection criteria and revisions to regional land-use plans.

Centre Party chair Antti Kurvinen likened the situation to early automobile regulation, arguing that clear rules are essential. Liike a journalist at one outlet called for a government-led long-term energy strategy, while SDP’s Timo Harakka proposed a household price-cap funded by data-centre operators. Christian Democrat Peter Östman and Finns Party’s Jani Mäkelä emphasized national-level coordination and possible levies, and Greens’ Oras Tynkkynen suggested new electricity taxes and ecological compensation schemes.

Why it matters

Clear national policies are needed to balance data-centre growth with Finland's energy security and environmental goals.
