Fire in Mumbai high-rise kills toddler and adult, injures six others
A blaze on the 11th floor of a Vile Parle residential building killed a 2.5-year-old child and an adult, while six people were injured.
Around 10:02 pm on Tuesday, a fire broke out in flats 1101 and 1102 on the 11th floor of the Shanta Bhavan building on Baptista Road in Vile Parle, Mumbai, igniting electrical wiring, an air-conditioning unit and assorted household goods across roughly 4,000 sq ft. Fire brigade crews, police, electricity department officials, a 108 ambulance and ward staff responded, bringing the blaze under control by 12:25 am and fully extinguishing it at 1 am.
The incident claimed the lives of a 2.5-year-old child, Abir, and 23-year-old Ankita; eight people were injured, with two taken to Cooper Hospital (firemen Manoj Sonavane and Shivam Dwivedi, later discharged) and six to Nanavati Hospital, where two more victims died and four others received treatment. The remaining injured—Parth, Hiren, Yashasvi and Abishek—were reported stable or discharged. Authorities have not yet determined the fire’s origin.
