Fire reignites near Étang de Journu in Le Porge, prompting swift firefighting response

A fire erupted in the peat area near the Étang de Journu in Le Porge on Sunday, affecting roughly half a hectare of land. The Gironde fire department quickly mobilised a sizable force, including 60 firefighters, seven forest fire trucks, and multiple aerial water drops, to tackle the blaze. Officials noted that the terrain made access challenging, which justified the extensive resources.

The operation succeeded in fully containing the fire within an hour, though faint smoke plumes persisted the following day. Some underground peat sections may stay hot, prompting ongoing surveillance by firefighters with support from the DFCI. The incident revived memories of the severe Saumos megafire that struck the commune earlier in the summer, during which nearly 200 buildings were destroyed and reconstruction efforts are still underway.
