Firefighters union takes SA Metropolitan Fire Service to tribunal over protective gear

The United Firefighters Union has filed a dispute with the SA Employment Tribunal, alleging the Metropolitan Fire Service is not supplying adequate or properly maintained protective equipment.

The United Firefighters Union lodged a formal complaint in the SA Employment Tribunal, claiming the Metropolitan Fire Service has failed to provide enough personal protective equipment and to keep it in safe condition. Acting secretary Peter Russell highlighted examples of broken zippers, mis-sewn components and long laundering delays that could expose firefighters to severe burns or death. The service maintains that its operational PPE complies with relevant standards, that reserves are stocked across Adelaide and that newer gear has been rolled out since 2023.

Recent safety alerts prompted chief officer Jeff Swann to suspend structural-firefighter training at the Angle Park centre pending a review. The union also cited a shortage that left fire trucks at the Elizabeth station unusable over a long weekend. Emergency Services Minister Rhiannon Pearce noted the state has increased funding for equipment and training in the 2024-25 budget.

Why it matters

Firefighter safety and emergency response could be compromised if protective gear shortages persist.
