First Nations children commissioner urges Queensland to drop Youth Justice circuit breaker bill

The National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People, Sue-Anne Hunter, has written to Queensland officials asking them to abandon the proposed Youth Justice (Circuit Breaker) legislation.

In an open letter, Commissioner Sue-Anne Hunter warned that the circuit breaker bill could conceal child abuse and disproportionately affect First Nations young people. She urged the Queensland government to reconsider the measure before it proceeds to a parliamentary vote. The legislation remains pending in the state parliament and has not yet been enacted.

Why it matters

The appeal highlights concerns that new legislation could mask abuse and single out Indigenous youth, affecting child protection policies.
