First Naval Drone Clash Recorded, Unarmed Russian Vessel Targeted by Ukrainian Craft
Ukraine released footage of the inaugural naval drone engagement, showing an unarmed Russian boat being struck by a Ukrainian drone.
Ukrainian sources have published a minute-long video documenting the first ever combat between naval drones. The clip combines views from three or four cameras, some mounted on a Ukrainian boat and another from the air, suggesting the presence of an additional aerial platform. The Ukrainian drone locks onto a Russian vessel that shows no visible armament, then fires, causing debris to break away and the craft to descend toward the seabed.
On the targeting display, a circular diagram likely indicates gun alignment and a distance readout, for example 173 meters, is visible. The video was originally silent but later set to a metal track for presentation. Analysts note the one-sided nature of the encounter and anticipate future, more balanced drone battles at sea.
Why it matters
It marks a new phase in maritime warfare, showing how unmanned systems can engage enemy vessels.
