First Rail Baltica Platform in Kurtna to Be Completed This Year

Construction of the inaugural Rail Baltica waiting platform in Kurtna is slated for completion within the year, though passenger services will not start for several more years.

Rail Baltic Estonia has started the construction phase for stations on the Rail Baltica corridor, beginning with a platform in the village of Kurtna that should be ready before year-end. The initial platform will measure 115 metres, while additional 210-metre platforms are planned to accommodate both international passenger trains and Estonia's regional Elron services. Design solutions include elevators and overhead walkways, with underpasses considered where appropriate.

Track installation is projected to arrive at Kurtna in 2029, potentially enabling a test train by late 2030, and all stations are expected to be operational for the public by the end of 2032. Elron has not yet announced new local train procurement, leaving the timeline for testing unclear. Long-time resident Anna Lutter, whose family land the line crosses, runs a local accommodation centre for construction crews and remains uncertain whether the railway will boost local business and residency.

Why it matters

The platform marks the first tangible step of the multinational Rail Baltica project, linking the Baltic states to the European rail network.
