FIS faces financial crisis, possible prize-money cuts threaten cross-country skiers

The International Ski Federation is confronting a budget shortfall and may reduce prize money, prompting worries among World Cup cross-country athletes.

The International Ski Federation disclosed a severe budget problem during its autumn conference, indicating that prize money for various ski disciplines may be reduced. President Alexander Ospelt described the federation’s position as critical and in need of immediate action. Secretary Urs Lehman argued that athletes might have to increase competition to earn comparable incomes.

Swedish cross-country star Moa Ilar expressed that a reduction would be “incredibly tough” and could jeopardize her ability to continue competing. Sweden’s ski federation head Lars Öberg attended the meeting but said he had not been involved in the relevant committees and could not confirm which events would be targeted, suggesting alpine skiing might be the primary focus. The uncertainty has sparked significant concern within the cross-country community.

Why it matters

Potential prize-money cuts could jeopardize athletes' livelihoods and the sport's competitive balance.
