Five dead in Sarawak helicopter crash sparks safety review of Flying Doctor Service

On Sept 8, a helicopter serving the Health Ministry's Flying Doctor Service crashed in Sarawak, resulting in the deaths of a veteran pilot and four medical staff. The incident has raised questions about the suitability of the aircraft, its age, and the challenges of operating in the region's mountainous and weather-prone environment. Aviation safety specialist Associate Professor Major Dr Muhammad Harun Muhammad Sufian noted that an aircraft's safety depends on cumulative flight hours, maintenance history, component condition, and predictive upkeep rather than age alone.

The investigation, conducted under ICAO Annex 13 guidelines, will involve detailed analysis of the wreckage, parts, maintenance documentation, and operational records, with a preliminary findings report expected within roughly a month and a comprehensive report within a year. In response, the Health Ministry has halted the Flying Doctor Service in Sarawak until the inquiry is completed.
