Studies on the BR-319 highway and on forest loss around both large and small dams used satellite data to reveal that infrastructure can open vast areas to further settlement, logging and speculation, with small hydropower sometimes causing higher forest loss per megawatt than larger projects. Fearnside's findings have informed public hearings, Brazilian policy discussions, and international climate reports, including contributions to the IPCC.
