Five miners killed as rescue teams recover bodies after Soma mine collapse

On Friday, rescue crews in western Turkey recovered the bodies of three miners who had been trapped after an underground coal mine collapsed in the Soma district of Manisa province. The mine, run by İmbat Madencilik, suffered the failure on Thursday, leaving seven workers underground; two were rescued and taken to hospital, with one now released and the other still under care. Earlier, two bodies had been retrieved, and the latest recovery brings the death count to five.
The Manisa governor’s office announced the end of search and rescue operations via its X account. The tragedy revives memories of the 2014 Soma disaster, Turkey’s deadliest mining accident that claimed 301 lives.
