Five of Nine Washington Supreme Court Seats Appear on This Year's Ballot

A rare election sees five of the nine Washington Supreme Court positions up for vote, prompting voter-education efforts.

In an atypical election, five of the nine Washington Supreme Court seats are on the ballot, meaning the new court could decide high-profile issues such as the Millionaires’ Tax and the Parents’ Bill of Rights. Ten candidates will appear on voters' ballots, a situation that many find overwhelming. To address the information gap, the League of Women Voters of Washington interviewed all candidates with a uniform set of four questions, posting the videos on its website and longer written answers on Vote411.org.

The organization highlighted the difficulty voters have in grasping judicial responsibilities. A candidate forum organized by the Rotary Club of Olympia in September is also posted on TVW.org, and further details are available through the Washington Supreme Court’s own site.

Why it matters

The election could reshape Washington's highest court and affect major policy decisions.
