Flaming Limoges Town Hall tower collapses amid cheering rioters

At about 20:30 the historic town hall tower in Limoges fell after burning for hours, while nearby rioters celebrated the collapse.

A wave of riots erupted across France on Saturday, featuring arson, looting and attacks on police by largely migrant-identified groups. Major cities such as Paris, Marseille, Lyon and Bordeaux saw shops pillaged and several historic buildings set alight. In Limoges, rioters blocked the A20, set fire to police cars and stormed the historic town hall, igniting a blaze that engulfed its famed bell tower.

After hours of burning, the tower collapsed at 20:30, prompting jubilant shouts from the crowd. Police reported hundreds of arrests nationwide and 150 officers injured during the clashes. The damage to heritage sites and the scale of disorder are being described as unprecedented in recent French history.
