Flash flood shatters historic Himalayan trade gateway and destroys key border bridge

Rasuwagadhi, a narrow settlement in Nepal’s Himalayan corridor that has functioned as a trans-Himalayan trade artery for more than 260 years, was hit by a flash flood in July 2025. Once a mule-caravan route for rice, salt and wool, the pass now channels Chinese electronics, garments and a surge of electric vehicles, with customs records indicating over 6,500 Chinese EVs entered in 2025-26. The sudden flood dislodged hundreds of 40-foot shipping containers parked along the Timure riverbanks, sending them downstream to batter bridge pillars, road embankments and power lines.

The disaster also destroyed the Miteri Sanghu (Friendship Bridge) over the Lhende/Koshi river, severing the only road crossing on the Nepal-China border. Historically, the corridor was vital for Gorkha’s capture of Nuwakot in 1744 and subsequent Nepalese invasions of Tibet, with forts such as the 171-year-old Rasuwagadhi fort marking its strategic importance. Modern traffic has turned the area into a temporary automobile depot, increasing its vulnerability to such natural hazards.
