Flash floods sweep nine villages on Pangkor Island, waters recede by afternoon

Heavy rain caused flash floods across nine locations on Pangkor Island this morning, but floodwaters had fully withdrawn by 2 p.m.

A prolonged period of heavy rain this morning produced flash floods that affected nine distinct locations on Pangkor Island, such as Kampung Sungai Pinang Besar, Kampung Masjid and Taman Pangkor Mutiara. The Perak Disaster Management Committee Secretariat said the situation was first reported at 5.30 a.m. and attributed the flooding to the sustained rainfall rather than high tide. Floodwaters fully receded by 2 p.m., after which residents started to clear debris and dry out their houses.

In the neighboring districts of Larut, Matang and Selama, conditions also improved; three temporary relief centres closed at 1.30 p.m. while two others stayed open, sheltering 146 flood victims from 48 families. Authorities continue to monitor the area as cleanup efforts proceed.

Why it matters

The floods disrupted daily life for dozens of residents and required emergency sheltering, highlighting local vulnerability to intense rainstorms.
