Flatbed truck crashes onto Manhattan sidewalk, killing 77-year-old man

Police say a graffiti-covered flatbed truck loaded with wooden pallets careened onto a sidewalk at a Lower Manhattan intersection on Thursday morning. The driver, a 66-year-old man, was making a right turn on Bowery from Canal Street when the vehicle struck three pedestrians: a 77-year-old man who later died at Bellevue Hospital, and two women, 71 and 52, who remain in stable condition. After the initial impact, the truck proceeded to the end of the block at Hester Street, where it collided with a sedan before coming to a halt.

Officers administered a field sobriety test to the driver, who displayed no overt signs of impairment, and took him into custody without immediate charges. The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is conducting a detailed investigation into the incident.
