Flipboard buys Portland feed-builder Graze to boost open-social advertising

Flipboard announced it has acquired Portland-based Graze, a startup that lets creators build and monetize feeds on the open social web.

Flipboard disclosed on Wednesday that it has purchased Graze, a Portland-based startup that develops feed-building software for the open social web. Graze’s platform lets users create, customize, publish and oversee Bluesky feeds, and it has transmitted over 41 billion posts to about 12 million people in the 21 months since its inception. The company’s ad model relies on contextual placements rather than user-tracking, offering a 70/30 revenue split that favours the feed’s curator.

Currently more than 7,000 feeds operate on Graze, with roughly 60 % of traffic generating ad revenue. Flipboard’s CEO Mike McCue praised the privacy-friendly ad technology, while Graze co-founder Devin Gaffney said the partnership accelerates growth thanks to Flipboard’s advertiser relationships. Post-acquisition, Flipboard will continue using Graze’s tools across the AT Protocol ecosystem, extending beyond Bluesky to its own apps. Financial terms were not disclosed; Graze had raised $1 million in early 2025 and employs two staff members.

Why it matters

The acquisition could shape how creators earn money on decentralized social platforms without invasive tracking.
