Florida fisherman survives shark bite thanks to nearby medically-trained boaters
A 43-year-old man was mauled by a large shark while fishing near Key West and was rescued by two boaters who were nurses, preventing his death.
While angling at a sandbar in Key West, Florida, Dave Daniel, 43, was suddenly bitten by a shark he identified as a six-to-seven-foot nurse shark. The animal latched onto his legs, causing severe bleeding that filled the water around him. Two boaters on the scene, both nurses, immediately administered first-aid and kept him alive until the U.S. Coast Guard arrived.
The Coast Guard later airlifted Daniel to a Miami hospital, where surgeons performed two operations to treat his injuries. He was discharged a few days later, though his foot remains immobilized in a boot and he faces a lengthy rehabilitation. Daniel expressed deep gratitude for the rescuers, saying he would have died without their intervention.
