Florida pioneers resilient designs as rising seas and storms threaten coastal communities

Florida is showcasing innovative building and landscape solutions to cope with increasing flood risk and stronger storms along its coastlines.

After Hurricane Andrew devastated southern Florida in 1992, the state has turned its experience into a laboratory for climate-resilient design. Landscape architect Jeffrey Huber and other experts now promote a blend of architecture and infrastructure that can endure higher tides, storm surges and saltwater intrusion. Start-up Kind Designs fabricates affordable, 3D-printed seawalls that mimic mangroves or barnacle clusters, reducing wave energy by at least 45 % and attracting native species; sixteen installations already exist across the state.

In Miami Beach, the Vista Breeze senior housing complex sits 10 feet above sea level, uses waterproof concrete and corrosion-resistant rebar, and is oriented for passive cooling. Fort Lauderdale’s DC Alexander Park combines public recreation with flood-absorbing forested edges, while university-led initiatives aim to fund resilient projects for disadvantaged communities and develop “sponge parks” that manage stormwater. Planners such as Aaron DeMayo and Thomas Klein argue that these solutions, though costly, offer high returns by protecting extensive waterfront property and could serve as models for other coastal regions worldwide.
