Florida Rep. Randy Fine calls property taxes a rent-to-government scheme

At the 2026 Republican Jewish Coalition National Leadership Summit, Rep. Randy Fine described property taxes as a system that makes homeowners effectively rent from the government. He noted that the tax applies regardless of a homeowner’s financial situation, penalizing both the unemployed and lottery winners alike. Fine suggested replacing property taxes with a more flexible sales-tax structure that rises with spending and falls with reduced consumption.

He pointed to Amendment 3, slated for the November ballot, which would create exemptions reducing a home’s taxable value by up to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, potentially cutting annual bills by roughly $3,000. Fine framed the amendment as a necessary correction to rising property values and local government revenue growth outpacing population growth. The measure does not eliminate property taxes but aims to ease the burden for many Floridians.
