Florida surgeon performs first U.S. remote robotic prostate operation
A Florida doctor remotely controlled a surgical robot to remove a 66-year-old man's prostate at a hospital 56 km away.
On Sunday, a surgeon at AdventHealth Celebration in Celebration, Florida, performed a remote robotic prostatectomy on a 66-year-old man located at AdventHealth in Minneola, about 56 km distant. Dr. Vipul Patel directed the robot from his institute while a board-certified surgeon stood beside the patient in the Minneola operating suite. The operation successfully removed the prostate and the patient is reported to be recovering without complications.
This marks the first U.S. surgery of its kind conducted between two hospitals and is being studied under an FDA-authorized trial to assess safety, efficacy, and technical performance. If proven viable, the technology could expand access to specialized care for patients regardless of geographic location.
Why it matters
Remote robotic surgery could reduce geographic barriers to specialized medical treatment.
