Florida woman on trial for alleged revenge crash that killed boyfriend after text dispute

Leigha Mumby is on trial in Florida for allegedly steering an SUV into the woods at high speed, leading to the death of boyfriend Daniel Waterman months after the crash.

In Flagler County, Florida, Leigha Mumby faces a jury for vehicular homicide after a February 2025 crash that left boyfriend Daniel Waterman paralyzed and later dead. Prosecutors allege Mumby, enraged by a text from another woman, drove the SUV at speeds exceeding 100 mph and executed a sharp 45-degree left turn, sending the vehicle into the woods. Waterman's later account that Mumby deliberately caused the crash was excluded from evidence, leaving jurors without his testimony.

Defense attorney Reid Hart suggests an unforeseen incident inside the vehicle may have caused the loss of control. Witnesses reported Mumby had announced a pregnancy earlier that day and expressed concerns that Waterman was texting other girls. The trial proceeds without the victim’s statements, while his family mourns and supports the charges.

Why it matters

The trial shows how evidence rules affect murder cases and raises issues of intent in domestic-violence-related crashes.
