Florin Şerban’s anti-Roma drama clinches top prize at Locarno Festival

The Locarno Film Festival awarded its highest honor, the Golden Leopard, to Florin Şerban’s “You Don’t Belong Here,” a Romanian drama that confronts anti-Roma discrimination. The film also earned a special mention for the work of its young lead, Teodor Butănescu. In the same International Competition, Hong Sangsoo was named Best Director for the off-beat family picture “Nowhere to Lay My Eyes.”

The festival’s gender-neutral Best Performance prize was split between Hong’s frequent collaborator Kim Minhee for the same film and Italian star Monica Bellucci for her supporting turn in Giovanni Tortorici’s “Ketticè.” Additional awards were presented across the festival’s various sections, highlighting emerging talent and short-form cinema.
