Flydubai co-pilot detained after attempted crash into airport facility

A flydubai co-pilot who tried to incapacitate the captain and steer the aircraft into an airport structure has been detained in the UAE and is being interrogated.

Hamam al Hamami, a former Oman Air pilot now with flydubai, is accused of assaulting the captain mid-flight and planning to bring the aircraft down on an airport facility or a stationary plane. After a brief struggle, passengers and two off-duty pilots subdued him, and the crew declared an emergency, landing the jet at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. The flight, carrying about 180 passengers, most of whom were Israeli nationals, continued to Saudi territory where the passengers were later repatriated.

Al Hamami is being held in the United Arab Emirates and subjected to further questioning, with authorities indicating they will seek the maximum possible sentence. Israeli officials have joined the probe, and a senior Emirati source said the co-pilot could face capital punishment. The incident is being treated as a lone-wolf attack, and investigations are ongoing.

Why it matters

The case highlights aviation security risks and international cooperation in responding to a potential terrorist act.

How the sides frame it

MODERATE AGREEMENT

Centrist coverage presents the incident as a criminal act by the co-pilot, noting the presence of Israeli passengers and the prospect of a severe sentence, while right-leaning coverage frames it as a terrorist plot aimed at Ben Gurion Airport and other Israeli or U.S. targets.

CENTER

Centrist outlets report the co-pilot’s assault, the emergency landing and legal repercussions, highlighting the Israeli nationality of most passengers and the possibility of capital punishment.

RIGHT

Right-leaning outlets portray the event as a pre-meditated plot to kill the captain and crash the plane into Ben Gurion Airport, stressing alternative targets such as a Tel Aviv skyscraper or a U.S. base.

The right emphasises

  • the co-pilot allegedly selected the airline after researching flights to Tel Aviv
  • the scheme involved crashing into Ben Gurion Airport, with backup targets including a Tel Aviv skyscraper or a U.S. base in Jordan
  • the attack was described as a plotted murder of the captain
