Flying Remains Far Safer Than Driving, New Study Shows Despite Public Fear

A recent Embry-Riddle study finds that U.S. commercial airline travel is dramatically safer than car, truck, motorcycle or bus travel, even though plane crashes feel more frightening.

The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University team, supported by the Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety, compared fatality rates across transportation modes using ten years of U.S. data. They concluded that commercial aviation’s fatality risk is about 626 times lower than that of cars and trucks for the same distance, and more than 22,000 times lower than motorcycles, with buses still nine times riskier than planes.

Over the study period, 73 people died in airline accidents, yielding roughly one death per 97.7 million boardings. Historical analyses of the post-9/11 period suggest that avoiding flights added hundreds of road fatalities, especially among pedestrians and cyclists. The authors argue that risk perception is skewed by vivid crash images and a sense of personal control while driving, leading travelers to substitute a rare, visible danger with more common, less visible hazards. Effective communication should contextualize aviation safety rather than merely reassuring anxious passengers.
