Food-truck builder convicted of nearly $1 million fraud targeting immigrant buyers
Stanislaus County prosecutors secured a conviction against 30-year-old Fernando Ochoa Jauregui for defrauding almost $1 million from immigrant customers of his 8A Food Trucks business.
Fernando Ochoa Jauregui, owner of 8A Food Trucks, was convicted in Stanislaus County of 18 fraud counts and one witness-intimidation count after prosecutors said he swindled nearly $1 million from aspiring food-truck owners, most of whom were immigrants. He allegedly accepted payments for custom trucks and trailers but diverted the money to personal expenses such as drugs, vacations and a luxury Corvette, even using some funds to produce a Mexican corrido on YouTube.
The court ordered restitution and set a sentencing date in October, where he is expected to receive a 20-year prison term. District Attorney Jeff Laugero emphasized the aggravated nature of the crime, noting Ochoa targeted vulnerable individuals because of their immigration status. Victims like Paulina Quintal and her husband Alejandro Gonzalez reported severe financial loss, health crises, and threats they attribute to Ochoa, prompting ongoing police investigations. The case follows a 2024 report that first brought the scheme to light and underscores the broader risks faced by immigrant entrepreneurs.
