Forbes list keeps Mészáros atop Hungarian wealth rankings amid government scrutiny
Lőrinc Mészáros remains the richest Hungarian, while the new government’s anti-corruption drive could reshape the wealth hierarchy.
The most recent Forbes assessment confirms Lőrinc Mészáros and his family as Hungary’s wealthiest, with assets rising slightly from 1,749.1 billion to 1,785.7 billion forints. Since the change of government, the National Asset Recovery and Protection Office has begun reviewing major holdings, naming Mészáros as its initial focus. Opus Global, a key listed company in Mészáros’s portfolio, saw a 22 percent drop in revenue but still posted a record profit, though its bonds were downgraded due to state-contract dependence and political uncertainty.
A proposed wealth tax, still under draft, could impact the top five fortunes if enacted. Other magnates such as Sándor Csányi, Zsolt Felcsuti and Tibor Veres also appear on the list, each facing varying degrees of regulatory pressure.
