Forbes top editor departs after receiving $6 million from partner firm founder

Forbes’ editor-in-chief Randall Lane left the company after a report revealed he accepted a $6 million payment from RJ Shook, whose firm supplies rankings for the magazine.

Forbes announced that its longtime editor and chief content officer, Randall Lane, has exited the company, following one outlet's report that he received a $6 million payment from RJ Shook, the founder of Shook Research. Shook Research has partnered with Forbes since 2016 to produce wealth-adviser rankings, and the payment was made after Shook sold a majority stake in his firm to a private-equity buyer. An internal email dated July 23 confirmed Lane’s departure but gave no details.

A source at one outlet said staff learned of the alleged misconduct by reading the Times story. Lane told one outlet he considered the payment a gift for advice he had offered and admitted he should have disclosed it, calling his actions a serious error in judgment. Forbes’ editorial policy explicitly bans staff from accepting any compensation from entities they cover, and the company said it could not comment further. The episode highlights ongoing concerns about media credibility and conflicts of interest.

Why it matters

It underscores how undisclosed payments can erode trust in major news outlets.
