Forbion secures €2.3 bn for new biotech funds, becoming Europe's largest life-sciences VC

Venture capital firm Forbion raised €2.3 billion for two new biotech funds, bringing its assets to about €7.5 billion and making it the biggest specialist life-sciences investor in Europe.

Forbion, a venture capital group focused on life-sciences businesses, completed a €2.3 billion raise for two new biotech funds, its largest capital call to date. The influx lifts the firm’s total assets under management to roughly €7.5 billion, which it says makes it the leading specialist investor in Europe, according to Preqin figures. The funds are slated to back about 30 companies, spanning early-stage innovators to firms already testing therapies in patients, with investments planned for both European and North American markets.

Key backers include Dutch pension fund managers MN and PGGM, alongside U.S. pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The fundraising supports the Dutch government's recent initiative to recruit high-skill foreign talent into life sciences and biotechnology, a sector highlighted in its national talent strategy.

Why it matters

The massive capital injection could accelerate European biotech development and strengthen the region's drug pipeline.
