Foreign Tourist Spending in Japan Reaches Record 7.06 Trillion Yen Despite Visitor Drop
Foreign visitors spent a record 7.06 trillion yen in Japan from January to September, up 1.9% year-on-year, even though arrivals fell 2.9% to 30.73 million.
The Japan Tourism Agency reported that tourist expenditures, including shopping and lodging, hit 7.06 trillion yen, a 1.9% increase from the same period last year. Meanwhile, the Japan National Tourism Organization said the number of foreign visitors declined 2.9% to 30.73 million, marking the first drop in five years. The decline was driven largely by a 55.5% plunge in Chinese arrivals amid strained bilateral relations.
Why it matters
Higher tourist spending offsets visitor declines, showing Japan's tourism sector remains financially resilient.
