Former AFL star Nicky Winmar sentenced to six months for violent assault
Ex-AFL player Nicky Winmar received a six-month jail term after being convicted of assaulting a woman in Cohuna, Victoria.
A court found Winmar guilty of three assault counts for smashing a woman's head against a door and pulling her hair in the town of Cohuna, north of Bendigo. The victim said the attack left her a "shadow of the person" she once was. Following the conviction, Winmar was stripped of his Australian Football Hall of Fame membership and a bronze statue at Perth Stadium was taken down. He was sentenced to six months in jail with a subsequent 12-month community corrections order, which his lawyers have appealed.
