Former Anglicare Victoria foster carers in Bendigo charged with child sexual abuse
Two men who were promoted as Anglicare Victoria's youngest foster carers have been charged with multiple child sexual abuse offences.
Andrew Clifford Grey and Daniel James Grey, a couple previously highlighted during Foster Care Week as among Anglicare Victoria's youngest foster carers, have been charged with a series of child sexual abuse offences. The Australian Federal Police allege that Andrew Grey sexually assaulted a child under 16, produced, transmitted and possessed child abuse material, while Daniel Grey is accused of similar online offences and failing to report sexual crimes.
Both are also charged with engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child. Their legal matters have been postponed, with Andrew Grey due back in court in October and Daniel Grey's hearing adjourned to November due to the volume of evidence. The men had been foster carers for 11 months and held other roles, including a team leader position at Northern Health and a teaching student placement, though none involved direct child contact. Local schools notified parents that the charges do not pertain to any of their students.
Why it matters
The case raises serious concerns about child safety and vetting processes in foster care systems.
