Former Argentina striker Ezequiel Lavezzi opens up about depression and Messi's support

Retired forward Ezequiel Lavezzi discussed his battle with depression after ending his career, crediting close friend Lionel Messi and family for helping his recovery.

Ezequiel Lavezzi, who helped Argentina reach the 2014 World Cup final, spoke candidly about the mental health struggles he faced after hanging up his boots in November 2019. The former Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain forward was admitted to a hospital for depression and now follows a regimen of medication and treatment. He emphasized the vital role played by his longtime friend Lionel Messi, as well as other former teammates such as Sergio Agüero and Paolo Cannavaro, in providing emotional support.

Lavezzi also praised his son for giving him renewed purpose and joy. The interview, conducted for Amazon Prime Italia, covered his career highlights, including a brief period with Hebei China Fortune, and his ongoing path toward recovery.
